How We Do It
Young Bristol is a charity which has worked across our city since 1928. We were formed as the "Bristol and District Federation of Boys Clubs", bringing together a network of voluntary and community boys clubs which existed at the time, as part of the burdgeoning boys club movement.
Much has changed since then, but today Young Bristol still supports a network of vibrant, independent community-based youth clubs, many of which are descended from the original boys clubs of 1928. We also remain a member of Clubs for Young People, which began life as the National Association of Boys Clubs.
Today in addition to our support of these youth clubs, we provide a range of activities directly to young people, which provide opportunities to gain confidence, raise aspirations and discover what they are capable of. Our activities are based around outdoor pursuits and encouraging young people to volunteer and participate in their communities, and you can find out more about them by clicking on "What We Do" above.
We have a staff team of 20 people, based at our Bedminster head office and around the city, and a budget of around £600,000, which does not include the operating budgets of our independent member youth clubs. We currently receive some funding from Bristol City Council to support our work, and we generate some income through "semi-commercial" sales of our outdoor activities. In addition, some of the projects that we run are funded by specific grants or contracts, such as the National Citizen Service. However, we are dependent upon fundraising and donations from our loyal supporters and partnerships with local businesses.
For example, as little as £10 will enable one young person to attend an open after-school session at our outdoor activity centre, £50 will enable us to support a young person through a 6-week volunteering placement where they can gain accreditation, and for £1000 we can provide a one year outdoor activity course for a young person, which will equip them with the qualifications and confidence to begin a career in the outdoor activities industry.
