Volunteer Rights

As a volunteer you have a right to expect:

  • To receive information / a clear idea about the tasks that you will be expected to undertake and of the responsibility that goes with those tasks.
  • To have a role in decisions that affect your volunteering.
  • To be treated fairly in recruitment, placement, training & support.
  • To have time to decide whether or not to volunteer.
  • To claim out of pocket expenses (not all organisations are able to afford to do this)
  • To be respected, safe and protected from harm.
  • To have enough breaks and go home on time.
  • To not be used to replace paid staff.
  • To enjoy your volunteering and to have fun.
  • To be respected and supported by paid staff and other volunteers.
  • To know who is responsible for you and your support.
  • To receive enough support to help you volunteer.
  • To be able to raise any concerns about the volunteering and complain if you need to.
  • To be able to say no if the tasks are unreasonable.
