It has been incredible to see the impact of our Outdoor Employment Programme during 2025–2026, where this year has become one of the most successful years since the programmes pilot in 2013. This year, we have supported more young people than ever before from challenging backgrounds, and many facing significant barriers to education and employment.
Our Outdoor Employment Programme is an entirely free programme, targetting young people aged 16-25 with barriers to employment. The programme helps young people to develop new skills, gain nationally recognised qualifications and build positive futures into employment.
Our Impact
During April 2025 - April 2026, the programme delivered 134 sessions, providing 335 hours of training, to 60 young people, with 42 new trainees joining the programme this year. Our contact and engagement remained strong throughout the year, resulting in 599 session attendances. The programme supported a diverse cohort of young people:
- 30% from ethnic minority background, including asylum seekers and refugees
- 80% with learning difficulties or barriers to employment
- Majority were not in education, employment or training (NEET), or were at risk of becoming NEET
Despite their ongoing challenges, over 60% of our trainees have gained nationally recognised qualifications, and more than 70% have achieved a positive progression into employment or education.

Our key highlights and achievements
This year, our 60 trainees have gained and achieved a total of 129 nationally recognised qualifications including First Aid, High Ropes Instructors, Paddlesport, RYA Powerboating, bobsleigh and skeleton as well as a number of other outdoor instructor qualifications. Many of our young people took part in a range of residential trips, volunteering and other programmes that built their experience in outdoor pursuits and improved their employability skills, including:
- 10 trainees gained direct employment with Young Bristol, running the Go Aloft High Ropes Course on the SS Great Britain
- 6 trainees volunteered with the Glastonbury Festival's recycling team
- 5 trainees completed the 100‑mile River Wye canoe expedition, leading novice paddlers from Young Bristol Youth Clubs
- 9 trainees joining an environmental awareness residential with the RSPB
- 7 trainees joining the Redpoint Volunteer Scheme for indoor climbing instructor development
- 8 trainees contributing to the SS Great Britain historic dockyard regeneration consultation
- Workshops in CV writing, interview skills, LinkedIn, nutrition, and personal finance
Two trainees who previously struggled with severe mental health challenges post-Covid, travelled to St Moritz, Switzerland, to complete eight skeleton runs on the Olympic Bobsleigh track, traveling at over 75mph down an icy mountain side. One is now a high‑ropes instructor; the other is training as a carpenter and won the Bristol Young Heroes Award.

Our partnerships
We know that through real collaborations and partnerships, initiatives such as the Outdoor Employment Programme can continue to change the lives of young people across the city. This year, we were pleased to work with a number of local and national organisations, to offer further qualifications and training to young people, including:
- SS Great Britain
- Royal Yachting Association
- Redpoint Climbing Wall
- Bristol Maritime Academy
- Ocean Generation
- RSPB
- Super Sliders Ice Sports Foundation
- and so many more!
More than 70% of our trainees have now progressed into employment or education this year, demonstrating the long‑term impact of stability, longevity, and opportunities. Former trainees now actively employ current trainees, proving long term investment that builds a cycle of opportunity, and creates a stable platform to build confidence and growth.
With the programme continuing to grow, the 2026 programme is set to offer even more life‑changing opportunities for young people across Bristol. Tofind out more and get involved, click here!
